Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
